Life is about taking chances and following your heart. The Winchester Brothers, who fight supernatural forces, like ghosts and vampires, often don’t know the kind of monster that they are dealing with before they rush in to save someone who needs their help. What allows these characters to face their biggest obstacles and fears? It has to do with remembering what they are doing it for. Remembering what they stand for allows multiple heroes, including Batgirl, Harry Potter, and the Winchesters, to face some of their greatest challenges even if they are feeling unsure of themselves. In many cases, the heroes are willing to try something new even if they don’t know if they are going to succeed because doing something is better than doing nothing. It’s about falling down and getting up again. They try to learn as much about the monster or obstacle they are facing as possible to maximize their chances of overcoming it. Heroes form a plan about how they will face a specific monster and often recruit sidekicks to help them. Once the heroes form a plan, they try it out, even if they aren’t sure if it will be successful, because they know that doing something is better than doing nothing. Heroes rarely ever fully succeed on the first try. Instead, every time they try to face their monsters, they learn something. Many might be comparing their starting point to where they want to end up as a way to shame themselves or demotivate themselves. I used to think that I couldn’t run. Between a knee injury and being out of shape and out of practice, I used to look at other people around me and be disappointed that I couldn’t run more than a minute without feeling out of breath. Then one day, I changed my goal. I decided that I would just run from one streetlight to the next one, a distance of about 95 feet. I was able to do that even though I ran slowly and felt out of breath by the time I got there. Then, my goal became to make it to the next one. After 2 months of very gradually increasing my distance, I was able to run 3 miles. It took 3 years for me to be able to run a marathon and what kept me going that entire time was just the motto, Just make it to the next streetlight. But she did not become a warrior overnight. Similarly, Bruce Wayne trains for years to become Batman, and Harry Potter and his friends spend many years studying magic before they are able to do it proficiently.
